In honor of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Azra AI is proud to highlight our Oncology Hero of November 2024, Colleen Presz. Colleen, an Incidental Lung Nodule Navigator at Inspira Health Medical Center, has dedicated nearly a year to a role that has quickly become her passion—helping patients navigate their lung cancer journeys.

A Journey into Patient Navigation

After transitioning to this new role less than a year ago, Colleen quickly found herself captivated by the unique impact of screening and early detection in oncology. She shared, “I was just very interested in the program and how we’re screening for these incidental lung nodules. So, that’s kind of what drew me into the interest of this program.”

Staying Motivated Through Patient Connections

Colleen's dedication to her patients fuels her daily motivation. Each interaction is an opportunity to support individuals who may be facing a life-altering diagnosis. “Every time I get off the phone with a patient, [I] really feel good about it,” she says. “Whether you’re even reporting that there could be something more serious, or it could just be as simple as a repeat CAT scan, [or] a follow-up in six months or a year.” Her empathy shines as she describes the gratitude patients express for the guidance she provides, especially in those initial conversations.

The Value of Early Intervention

One of Colleen’s most memorable cases involved a patient who was initially hesitant to schedule follow-up appointments. Colleen’s persistence ultimately led the patient to come in, where early-stage lung cancer was detected. “She finally came in for her appointment [and then] everything [was] like a domino effect…They caught it early stage 1A and [she] doesn’t have to get chemo or radiation,” Colleen recalls. For her, seeing patients overcome their fears and find positive outcomes through early intervention reinforces the value of her work.

The Power of Technology in Oncology Navigation

With advanced technology like Azra AI’s platform, Colleen can connect with patients shortly after incidental findings are flagged. This rapid response allows her to guide patients toward necessary follow-up care without delay. “I’m blown away with how this early intervention technology of, like, picking this up just how quick you can get things moving,” Colleen shares. “I can call [patients] within a day of reading it…sometimes even that day if the patient is discharged.” This timely follow-up helps patients address potential health issues sooner rather than later, often catching cancers at a more treatable stage.

Advice for Fellow Navigators

To new navigators, Colleen offers encouraging words about collaboration and seeking support. “You’re never alone,” she says, emphasizing the importance of reaching out within their team or to Azra AI for guidance. Reflecting on her own experience with Azra AI, she adds, “These like every few weeks or just as often as I need it to meet with someone from Azra…they listen to you.” The support she has received has been instrumental, allowing her to improve her program and better meet patients’ needs.

A Bright Future for Oncology Care

Colleen’s dedication and compassion have set a standard for patient navigation, proving that early intervention and personal connection can profoundly impact patient outcomes. Through her work, she exemplifies the importance of patient-centered care, from initial diagnosis through follow-up, reminding each patient that they are not alone in their journey.

Congratulations to Colleen Presz, Azra AI’s Oncology Hero for November 2024, for her tireless commitment to her patients and her inspiring contributions to the field of oncology.
